Integrating Livestock Onto Cropland
Sleepy Eye Roots and Rotation
Join us for a field day to learn about the benefits of crop and livestock integration and how it fits within a farming operation. Come see for yourself how these practices could work for you!
Your registration includes:
Presentations and demonstrations by experienced farmers and educators on topics such as: grazing management, cover crops, soil health, year-round forage planning, and more
Networking opportunities over a shared meal
Educational resources from University of Minnesota Extension
This field day will take place at Port-Haven Dairy and Portner Farms in Sleepy Eye, MN. Port-Haven Dairy and Portner Farms, a partnership between brothers Tom and Mark Portner, has been integrating crops and livestock to varying degrees for 30 plus years. The dairy farm has recently pivoted to a diversified livestock operation working to optimize the grazing resources of the farm. The farm raises corn, soybeans, wheat, and rye utilizing no-till and cover crop practices. The next generation plays an active role in the family farm.
Faribault Roots and Rotation
This field day will take place at Honken Farms in Faribault, MN. Dan Honken took over family farm operations about 30 years ago, converting the then dairy farm into the beef cattle operation it is today. It is a conventional farm; growing corn, soybeans and other grains, with a focus on its cow/calf production. The 120 head herd is made up of Black and Red Angus, Charolais, and
Hereford cows that are bred to certified Black Angus Bulls. Calves are born in the Spring. In the
fall cows return home from summer pastures to graze on cover crops and harvested corn fields.
Erin and Dan started gardening together in 2005. Mostly vegetables in the early years, slowly
adding in cut flowers. Construction of the greenhouse in 2017 allowed them to scale up, adding
the “Erin’s Acre” business and begin offering CSA flower shares, U-Pick events and wholesale
flower sales.
In 2021 Dan and Erin were recognized by Rice County as their Outstanding Conservationists of
the Year. The award celebrated their sustainable farming practices, concentration on soil health,
protection of waterways from contamination and efforts to grow native prairie plants that attract
and sustain pollinators on their farm. The farm also runs on solar energy, selling excess power back to the grid.

This field day will take place at Mack Family Farm in Park Rapids, MN. They use no-till farming techniques, cultivating crops like corn, soybeans, rye, sunflower, canola, oats, field peas, and proso millet. Additionally, they rotationally graze a mix of wool and hair sheep, incorporating the livestock into their cropping system to improve pasture health and soil fertility.
